EV charging for terraced houses with on-street parking

Terraced streets are common across the East Midlands, and many homes park on the road. Home charging is possible where your council approves a permanent cross-pavement solution.

Last checked: 14 October 2026. Schemes change, so confirm on GOV.UK before you commit.

What is a cross-pavement solution?

A permanent way to get a charging cable from your home to your car across the pavement, such as a cable channel or gully set into the pavement.

Who decides if it is allowed?

Your planning and highways authorities (or a private landowner, where relevant) decide whether a cross-pavement solution is suitable. You need highways permission, and must get planning permission if your council requires it.

Is there a grant?

Yes: 75% of the cost to buy and install a socket, up to £500, if you install a permanent cross-pavement solution and only have on-street parking.

What if I cannot get permission?

Public on-street and local hub chargers are the alternative. Ask your council about its local charging plans.
